Day 4

The sessions today were in Google’s Chelsea Market building, but Julie and Steve got a quick special tour of the Ninth Avenue building this morning before the first session. It was a blast, and we were able to take some great photos! We were really glad to get a photo in front of an archetypal Google office landmark for potential use in a Virginia Living magazine piece that’s due to appear in October.

This morning we continued our work with Python dictionaries (as a motivating example, what if you want to know each word that occurs in a certain work by Shakespeare, as well as the number of occurrences of each word?). This afternoon we had another great coaching session (this one about the labs we’ll be doing in CMPS 160), and we did a simulation of the activity that can be used to kick off the first day of the spring semester class (CMPS 360).

We also snuck in a visit to the Starbucks Reserve Roastery next door to the Ninth Avenue building. What a crazy scene!

This evening, Julie had dinner with two Hollins alumnae, Rory Keeley and Maddy Lohr, both of whom were math majors. Maddy just graduated in May and has landed a job as a data scientist!
