                                All these terms come from the Greek κοιμητήριον, meaning "sleeping place."

 

                                    Interestingly, contemporary Greek prefers the much less inviting term νεκροταφείο, from the words for "dead" and "tomb."

 

                                        The term in Turkish is not related to either one of these: mezarlık.
