Hoy es 12 de octubre, un día muy importante y controvertido en el mundo hispanoparlante.
On Oct. 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón) and his small fleet set foot in the American continent for the first time. The world would be radically different after this event.
For centuries, in Spain and Latin America this day celebrated this setting foot (called "discovery") as a patriotic and/or cultural feat. It has only been recently that the colonial, imperialistic, racist, or, in one word, problematic nature of this celebration has been called into question. Click on the image for a brief summary of the different names the day has received in different countries, reflecting different attitudes towards it.
