In 1929, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney created the sculpture of Christopher Columbus that would become the symbol of the little known city of Huelva. This city is the capital of the province by the same name, located in the south west of Spain, along the border with Portugal. It was from this province that Columbus's first voyage set sail. And it's also where I was born. I have seen this sculpture many, many times, but I had no idea who had built it and how interesting the story behind it is.
